a5000 or a6000 Which you would you recommend. Sony Alpha a5000 or Sony Alpha a6000. I have only ever had a point and shoot. I want the next step up that will take great pics. In between a point and shoot and a DSLR. This would be an every day camera for me.

Mae -- I'd go with the a5000. It's the cheaper, entry model and since you're transitioning from a point and shoot, I don't think you really would need the boost in shutter speed and some of the other features (unless you plan on taking the time to learn more about manual photography). Yes, the a6000 has more megapixels, but unless you're blowing up the pictures, you don't need those extra ones.

Really, what it comes down to would be a) can you live with out the OLED viewfinder (most point and shoots don't have one, nor does the a5000); b) are you going to mount an external flash; and c) can you afford the few hundred extra dollars?

I've had a range of point and shoots and a DSLR and I have the a5000. I put the money I would have used to go up in model to buy a lens. Yes, there are some things that are left to be desired on the a5000 that the a6000 has, but if you're just a casual photographer, they're things you can live without (and didn't know you were missing).

Either camera would be a good next step. The big thing to remember is that these cameras actually need to be taken care of - lens cleaning is critical. Make sure to ask for the proper method of lens care to be demonstrated by the salesperson. Protect your lens with a UV filter - this way you protect the true lens from scratches, and it doesn't interfere with most photos. Always keep the camera body capped or with a lens attached - it's absolute hell to clean the interior of just about any camera.

Hi Mae, a5000 & a6000 are both great cameras. a5000 will be a good camera for casual shooting. However, we would recommend the a6000 for additional features and professional capability.-Anthony

Both of these cameras are superb. I bought the slightly less expensive 5000 but were money not a major consideration I'd go with the 6000. Either way you get a superb camera, filling the needs you stated.

a5000 is your best bet. Is excellent for Photo Class projects making all pictures clearer (because nor mirror reflections).
