“Can I use a Sony BDP-S6700 as a CD player only? I’m attempting to make it work with a Yamaha RX-V890 (no HDMI jack), and have made what looks like the proper connections (using “CD” channel), but I get no sound. Is having a TV in the loop a requirement?”

Yes, it will play CDs and just about any other disc format you can put in it. The sound comes out via the digital coax connector in the back, you will need to set your receiver to select that input as sound for the CD selection. You can't plug the digital out into the analog input and expect it to work, it won't.
