“I’ve got an hdmi for carrying video and sound to the tv when playing dvds, which works fine and dandy. I’ve got a coaxial digital taking sound to the AV receiver when playing cd’s; but it seems to always need the tv to be on? Anyone have a fix for this?”

I don’t think there’s a fix. I noticed that as well and I didn’t see any problems with just being able to see what was going on, onscreen.
