Regarding your concern, a standalone Blu-ray player like the BDP-S1700U is designed to send an audio/video signal out to a TV or monitor. And while the HDMI port on most laptops are also an output, meant for sending the laptop's display to an external screen, it is most likely that the devices won't work together, thus we would not recommend using a laptop but a TV or monitor.
