• Yes it does... Anytime your connected to the Internet wired or wifi it will consume data.

• Anytime you update or stream videos from apps your are using data. It does not use data while playing DVDs.

• Well, if you're going to use any of the apps on the player, those apps will use your Internet data. If you don't need the apps, could just connect it to the Internet to update the player, and then disconnect it from the Internet. I use Wi-Fi for my player. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but if you buy this player my suggestion is to only connect it to the Internet when needed to update it.
