Hi Basicuser, The key difference between the Rear 8 (SA-RS8) and the older SA-RS5 speakers is that the SA-RS5 model features built-in batteries and up-firing speakers. The batteries allow the RS5s to be placed anywhere temporarily without a power cable for up to 10 hours, while the up-firing drivers in the RS5s provide a dedicated channel for overhead audio (like Dolby Atmos). The Rear 8 (SA-RS8) is a powerful, high-performance option but requires continuous AC power and does not include the dedicated up-firing driver. Thanks for choosing Sony. Best regards, Eliab
