“Had a Kenwood VR-615 receiver with its own subwoofer ( 10" using regular speaker wire; spring-clip connection). Bought a Sony STR-DH770 that has a sub out using RCA connector. The Kenwood subwoofer doesn't seem to work with the Sony. Suggestions?”

It's probably because the Sony is going to your preout. Once you connect a preout it diverts the signal to only the preout rca. I'd say your only option is to use speaker wire for both and don't plug anything in to the preout.
