The grip uses one CR2032 Lithium battery to power the Bluetooth. A battery is included in the package, so the grip can be used immediately.

It camps off the camera battery and uses very little energy. Pretty amazing. Very nice way to hold onto the camera and has complete stationary settings up and down. The camera tripod is small, but built into the unit. Really nothing else to buy.
