I don't use the view finder but from just checking it out when you put the camera to your face to look through the view finder it automatically puts the display window image into the viewfinder and when you take it away from your face it switches back to the display window. Does the same thing in shoot mode as well. The view finder is hidden until pulling down on a small mechanism.

Yes, you can set the LCD display of the DSCHX99 camera to turn off automatically when you look through the viewfinder. You can go to the MENU → (Camera Settings2) → [FINDER/MONITOR] and set it to Auto. You can also change this setting to Viewfinder to turn the LCD off and display the image only on the Viewfinder.
