I believe this recorder has the option to record by voice activation or just pressing the Rec button. The voice activation recording has to be turned on to function. It is optional.

Hi Jen, there is a possibility. The voice operated recording of the ICDPX440 is affected by the sound around you. However, you can always set its mic sensitivity in the menu according to the recording conditions. Thanks, -Mark
