I almost always shoot manual with as low an ISO as I can manage to get the best resolution. Then I play with the shutter speed the most to get the lighting right. Close to 1/1000 to ready for a quit shot if the bird I'm looking at takes off. Faster is almost always better for the motion shots. Image stabilization is very good on this camera so a slower shutter often works fine as in 1/300 or so. Experience is always the best teacher.
