“A few days back, I cashed in my reward certificates for 3 Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Code discs (not 4K). Asked the clerk if this player would play them, was told it would. Opened one and it just spins. Any idea why?”

If the clerk told you the blu-ray would play, it won't as this is not a blu-ray player. The DVD should play. I guess it upgrades the DVD to 1080p. I haven't used mine yet. The digital code should download and will be played back at 1080p, maybe higher.
