You don't need to put it in studs. There are mounting anchors at the hardware store that can go into sheetrock. The hold from 5-50 pounds per anchor. I have used them to install upper cabinets and not have any issues.

And apartment or large apartment buildings my have a narrowed space. Old trick is to use a coin and tap the wall as you move across it. Listen for the pich change to know your going across the stud. Make a small line where it statrs and then stops. In-between those lines is the stud. Then move over about a foot then do it again. Measure the distance and it should be 18 inches apart, if its 24 then you've probably got 12 inch stud spaces.
