“With the thought of adding the as much convenience as available to use the ps5 for more than just gaming, ex. Netflix, etc. however, I didn’t know it was considered a universal remote. If I connect it to the PS5, am I forced to connect it to the tv also?”

My remote will only control the volume of the tv. It doesn’t appear to to do anything besides volume at least on my tv. The remote could possibly have more functionality with Sony 4ks, not really sure with that though. Hope I helped you

No you are not forced while you are connecting the media remote it will give you the option to make the remote the main tv remote.
