Rick, The actual purchase itself from Best-Buy is a one time fee, but Playstation Plus membership requires an annual renewal. So every 12 months you will pay the $49.99 if you elect to continue your membership for online game play.

This is a one time purchase that lasts a year. Your PlayStation will warm you when it is close to expiring so you will have time to get another without losing any of your online benefits you may have.

You pay it once for the whole year. They give you the ability to play multiplayer along with free games every month (of their choice)
