This works well for us. We bought one for a similar reason. To hear what our son and his girlfriend were saying when we were not home. One thing. The recorder is very good, but it eats AAA batteries. Make sure to set the recording level to the middle quality to preserve battery life.

If you use the $20 Sony stereo lapel mic along with this, it will pick up conversations from across the house. I had it inside my helmet, and it picked up my sister on the other side of the house.
