There is a short beep when powered on but a not disruptive. If you connect it to your phone for a music app, there will be a louder tone when you receive a call...still not disruptive in an office atmosphere.

This device is awesome! However I will say the beep can be loud enough if you are in a quiet setting. I purchased this for watching my TV so as not to disturb others in the house who may be sleeping. The sound is quick, but loud enough to be heard. If it is quiet it will bring attention to the fact you are turning it on or receiving a call.
