Yes you can. I bought this system a month ago and use it in my house. You will need to purchase a center speaker as well as 6 additional book style speakers with base to get 7.1 sound. All speakers should be passive with the exception of the base. Klipech makes a good surround sound speaker system package so you might check that out JBL also has some great speakers. You cannot use this system with a surround bar
