I’m not sure. Because so far I’ve only use it for playing my DVD’s .sorry I couldn’t answer your question

It shouldn't require an internet connection to play DVD/Blue ray movies on disk. It will require the internet to use the streaming apps like Netflix available on the player.

No, just use HDMI cable and it functions. Cannot stream or get updates without good internet service.

No it doesn't. It only needs internet for streaming online services like NetFlix and YouTube, and for doing firmware updates the easiest way. You can still do firmware updates (if desired) by downloading onto a flashdrive and connecting that to the USB port. This player does work well for playing content from a home media server over your own WiFi, and of course for playing DVD and BluRay disks.
