You can use the Optical out for the audio if you have an older AV system, but with the HDMI cable being the only other option to connect to a AV system or the TV that's your best, Best set-up for both picture and the audio..
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.My HDMI cables from the player go directly to the new Sony 4K OLED, so to get the full surround sound I am using the Optical digital audio output. My Marantz has two optical and two coax inputs for digital audio and I am using all of them - the 4K player and the Apple 4K TV get the optical, and my X-Box and Direct TV are on the coax - they all work great. And no, I have not received a noticeable difference between either the Coax or the Optical - what I have run into a few times is a fault in an Optical line - something gets pulled pushed or pinched and that line is toast. That fragility doesn't seem as prevalent with the coax.
