For disc playback (CDs and DVDs), network connection is not required to use the core playing functions. However, please be aware that standard U.S. models of this player are typically Region 1 for DVD and Region A for Blu-ray, and discs purchased in Mainland China are usually coded Region 6 for DVD and Region C for Blu-ray.
