“Will the CD player play standard music CDs or does it have to be something I have recorded. I have checked out so many and saw on one that it may not play a copyrighted disc since this unit has the ability to record from the disc in the player to a USB.”

Hi Bluespower, as long that the disc format is supported, it should play. Below are the playable discs.
