A few differences.
1.) Speak to Chat feature. When you talk, the headphones will automatically pause the music, so you can chat without touching any controls. 
2.) They have improved the noise cancelling especially at high frequencies like human voices, great for office.
3.) 5 Microphones for better call quality.
4.) Slightly larger and deeper ear pads.
5.) Multipoint connection support. Can now connect to 2 devices at same time
6.) Bluetooth 5.0 support.

The multipoint is the killer feature for me and the reason I'm upgrading. I use them to listen to music on my phone and video chat for work on my laptop, it's annoying disconnecting/reconnecting to switch back and forth. The rest of the upgrades are nice, but if the XM3 had multipoint I wouldn't upgrade.

I have been using the xm3's for a year and a half, and reserved these on day 1. After eagerly awaiting the xm4's for the past year, sadly I really can't find any discernable difference in the noise cancelling quality. I was really hoping that Sony would offer something more than just a lateral move. If the ability to cancel noise is your only concern, then I would stick with the xm3 and save your money. All of the other incremental upgrades are expected by default in a maturing market, but for me it was only about the noise canceling.

The only difference I can see is it in the right ear cuff is a proximity sensor that lets the headphones know when you’re wearing them so when you take them off your music will pause And viceversa

You will be able to play from one device like your laptop then stop and play with your phone all without having to disconnect and reconnect.
