While it won't stop you from hearing the music, it will reduce the volume considerably. I use mine at rock concerts instead of ear plugs.

The Noise Canceling feature of these Bluetooth® headphones is initially set to automatically turn off after five minutes. You can change the Automatic Power Off setting in the Headphones Connect app from 5 minutes to 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 3 hours or, if you want Noise Canceling to stay on all the time, just simply tap Do not turn off. Also, the automatic power-off feature has only one setting, power-off after 15 mins of not wearing. The WH1000XM4 has an improved noise canceling function specifically for high frequencies. It is also very effective at removing everyday ambient noise. The noise canceling function works primarily on noise in the low-frequency band such as vehicles and air conditioning. Although noise is reduced, it is not completely canceled. These should be pretty effective at canceling out noise and even more so if you have audio playing while the noise cancelation features are on. -Ralph
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The noise canceling mode works even when you are not listening to anything through the headphones. Low to medium level ambient noise you generally do not hear when you have the headphones on noise canceling mode. If ambient noise is loud, you would hear something, but of course not near as much as you would without the noise canceling headphones.
