“When you turn these on, is there a voice that says "power on, bluetooth connected" like some other models? Or is there just a beep?”

Yes, it says “Power On” and then “Bluetooth connected” once you connect. As your switching the modes it will also say “Noise Cancellation Activated” or “Ambient Sound Activated”
