I have a 419 series, not the 220 series. But on the 419 it did require an additional 3", which I really did not have to spare. I think they offset them because the top of the washing machine slopes backwards.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The total depth of the stacked 220 series washer and dryer is 35-1/4", which does add approximately 5" to the depth of the unstacked units due to the overhang. This is due to the design of the machines, and there is not a kit other than the SK-5A which allows the units to stack without the overhang. I would also suggest reviewing the installation information in the User Manual, which can be downloaded as a pdf file from Samsung's website. In it you'll find detailed ventilation requirements, such as space needed for venting the dryer out of the rear of the machine, and the amount of clearance required if installing the dryer in an alcove or closet. Thank you for your interest, Ms. Samsung
