There is a "side by side" off-line two-player mode available as well. For Battlefront II, there is a groundbreaking single player campaign mode (not an "afterthought") with an all new story line bridging the gap between the death of the Emperor in Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. EA says there are 18 new worlds in Battlefront ||. Four of these are exclusive to the new single player campaign. How will your character, Iden Versio and her black ops team, avenge Emporer Palpitine's death at the hands of "rebel scum"?

It is both. You can play online or offline up to two people.
