It has a flexible boom that retracts into the one speaker. Pull it out to use the mic, has mute button on headset when not in use. Push the boom back in and goes almost flush with headset.

I have heard that if you push the mic all the way into the headset it mutes the mic but I haven't tested this. I like being able to push it back into the headset when I want to use these as just headphones or with my Switch.

It cannot be removed, but can be retracted into the headset for a cleaner look while still being active. There is also a mute button for the mic which deactivates it, in either the extended or retracted positions.
