Yes, you can, I don't see why you can not play 3ds games on the New Nintendo 2ds XL. Besides it is called the New 2ds XL, you just won't have the 3d capability on a 2ds than the 3ds.

Can't say 100% for sure but I don't see why it wouldn't. I used to have one of your consoles and it worked fine. I guess my best advice is, worst case- know the store's return policy if it doesn't work our for you. I know that isn't particularly helpful... maybe there's something online that could give you more info? Best of luck! Its a solid game!!!
