Hello, Thank you for reaching out to us. This system can record on either setting. You can continuously record on a few cameras while recording based on motion on others. You can set all cameras to record only motion, all cameras to record 24/7, or some cameras to record with motion while others to record 24/7. When it is set to only record motion detection, playback on the DVR will have a color indication for motion detection on the timeline. When it is set to record 24/7, playback on the DVR will have a color indication for motion detection and a color indication for non-motion on the timeline. With all 8 cameras recording 24/7 at 4K, the DVR has enough space for roughly 3 days. Hope this helps!
