The base mounts with screws. The camera is held on to the base by a magnet. It works really well, and you can just pull the camera off the base, and take it in and the house and charge it. Depending on what setting you set for the motion, will depend on how long the battery charge will last. I think I have mine set on High, and the battery usually last about five days.
