• No, when you connect an external it stops recording on the internal, but you can still watch any shows on it. I just added a 5Tb for $100 and doubt it will ever fill up.

• No, you can't upgrade the internal storage. Once an external storage device is connected, all future recordings will be stored there. You should still be able to access the recordings on the internal storage, but won't be able to add new recordings to the internal storage.
