• I got a new 1TB when i got my tablo, so, i dont know. It will tell you when you set it up if you have to re format.

• If you plug in your external Hard Drive to your new Tablo, our 4th Generation DVR will reformat it for you. The hard drive will be empty, your old recordings will be gone but its full capacity will be available for your new recordings.

• Not really but the recordings from the older version wont show up through the newer version and vice versa. It will record and take the space needed WITHOUT erasing your other recordings. I just plug it in my older version to view those recordings and vice versa.
