“Can you access the dvr files on the hdd you connect and offload them to a plex server later for example, or are they in a special format that the tablo only can use... im thinking if a movie or tv series i want to keep?”

The files on the HDD are in a special format. However if you get the OTA2GO application for Android or Apple, (Cost is $2.99) you can copy the files from the Tablo HDD to the Android or Apple device in MP4 format and then copy them to wherever you wish.
