• No, you will need an antenna for local channels, unless you have a cable subscription or other streaming service (in which case you don't want a Tablo).

• It really depends. You need an antenna to get channels, but if by external you mean outdoor, then the answer is not necessarily. I have an indoor antenna that was only $20 that picks up many local channels, but I'm only 8 miles from the broadcast stations. Depending on your distance and objects that could interfere (large buildings, trees, hills, etc.) you may or may not be able to pick up local channels. You'll just have to buy an antenna and test it.
