“If we couple this TV with an external Roku and an antenna will it be able to pick up local stations as well as ESPN without buying Hulu? It would be used in a mountain areas of Colorado.”

ESPN is an available streaming channel on both the Android TV and Roku streaming device. This TCL TV has a coaxial located on the back of the TV near the other inputs. By connecting an antenna you can receive over-the-air channels. However, the reception depends on the signal strength. Hope this helps! Thank you, TCL Customer Support
