• If you are only using Wi-Fi and an app then you would not need an HDMI cable, there would be nothing external to attach the hdmi cable to.

• If connecting a cable box, it would be recommended to connect via HDMI. If you are just using the streaming content on the TV, you would not need an HDMI cable as you are not connecting a device. Hope this helps! Thank you, TCL Customer Support
