• You could hook a soundbar up with an optical audio out cable, and the DVD player in one of the inputs. When you say a home theater system most people mean surround speakers and a receiver. Plug the speakers and DVD player into a reciever and the from the receiver take the hdmi cable out to the tv. They also make affordable home theaters in a box that come with speakers and a dvd player that plug straight into any tv.
