No but the shaft where it comes out of the machine can get a little hot. And on the higher settings I have had it pinch my skin once or twice but it's still the best unit I think. I tried the cheaper ones of the same brand and I've used the hypervolt a few times. The hypervolt break if you drop them. I'll fall asleep and drop this all the time hasn't broken yet.
