• No SIM card required. There is an optional subscription available though it is not necessary for the Tile to function. You would only be able to locate a car if it happens to have the tile in it and is near another tile which is able to connect to the internet. The maximum is approximately 100 ft or so.

• Distance is probably a couple Hundred feet. It uses Bluetooth not cell modem.
