Hello, The VIA 1515TM does not need internet service to work, traffic is updated via the traffic receiver/power cable included. You will need a computer with internet connection to update the maps. You can also use coordinates when planning a route or finding a location. Route calculation time is dependent upon a valid GPS signal. By downloading the quickgpsfix file on a regular basis you will decrease the time it takes for the device to lock onto a valid signal and calculate a route. Thanks
