“I am able to attach my earbuds via bluetooth and hear thru them. However, doing so also shuts down the tv's built in speakers. I wish to have both working at the same time--my wife has better hearing than I do, and prefers a lower volume than I do.”

Similar situation here. I recommend an external speaker or soundbar that you don't mind moving to get the volume right for both of you. I keep my speaker closer to me, or even on my other side to balance the volume for my wife and I.

Unfortunately we cannot do that, since the TV is design only good for 1 music at a time, and you are also connected to Bluetooth normally it will turn off the speaker of the tv.
