“How do you turn on (or off) closed-captions, especially when viewing a video on the USB drive? I don't see it anywhere in settings or options.”

Go to Settings menu either by pressing home then scroll the menu to the right and Settings is the last item on the top menu. Or if using the voice button just say "switch to settings". Move the selection highlight down using the circle button ( it works like a game controller) then scroll to the right ( circle button to the right) to option "Accessibility" with the icon image of a person with their arms extended. Select it by pressing the center of the circle button. Menu changes and first option is Closed Caption.
