No your R40 uses an ATA drive which is not the same as a serial ATA. A Parrallel ATA or (PATA) drive is what you need. And because your system was around when 40, 60, and 80gb hard drives were the largest ones, there might be some minor issues with size limitation (as in the laptop may only recognize up to 40, 60, or 80 gb)

With an older machine like that, you can also run into issues if the R40 can understand the larger capacity of the new drive.
