• Yes the back up software that comes with the drive can be turned off or set to back up whenever you want. If it is turned off the drive is just an external storage drive.

• I believe so because I just reformatted mine and didn't use any of the pre installed stuff.

• The backup program (NTI Backup Now EZ) ONLY runs as you configure it. The program is off by default. So you can use the Convio just a external storage if you want.
