I have had this drive for a couple of years now attached to a media center, but now I want to use it as file storage, and since then I have upgraded to Windows 10 and it won't recognize it when I plug it in, but will when I restart my computer (an HP Pavilion laptop), Do I need to format it and/or partition it?”

Thanks for your question, mark. Yes, the Canvio Desk drives are Windows 10 ready out of the box. The preloaded software (NTI Backup Now EZ) have released automatic updates to support Windows 10. Since the drive works when you restart your computer you shouldn't have to reformat the drive. You may want to check the AutoPlay settings in Windows 10 and make sure it's enabled for the external drive. Go to Settings > Devices > AutoPlay to configure that feature.
