There is no button. It is just a light with a bit of plastic in the middle. It sounds like you have a power issue on your USB port. I would try to place it in a USB 3 port and see if the problem keeps happening. Mine also flashes just before going back to sleep when I am not backing up data or the system is not indexing the drive.

There is no button on the hard drive. If you are using a Windows laptop you can "eject" the hard drive by pointing your cursor to the task bar in the lower right corner, click on the arrow and you should see an icon that says to safely remove hardware. Select your hard drive and you will see a prompt on your display that states that it is safe to remove the hard drive.
