If using for Time Machine backups, you will need to reformat the drive as a Mac OS Extended Journaled partition. That is the partition type recommended for just about any drive used with Mac OS X. If you need the drive to work with both Mac and Windows, you can leave it with the factory formatting, which is FAT.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.On the outside of the box is has that it is Mac compatible, for OS X 10.9, 10.8, 10.7, 10.6.6-10.6.8 with included NTFS driver for Mac. Time Machine requires reformatting to HFS+. Hope that helps.

If you format in Windows NTFS just be careful because the Mac cannot natively write to NTFS partitions without extra software so just make sure that you format with your Mac.
