Try pressing ALT F5 to unlock the touch pad.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is a Function key along the top row of keys on the keyboard that enables/disables the touchpad. Check that. My kids thought they broke the touch pad but they'd just accidentally pressed that button. Now they know if it isn't working, check that first. That fixed it for us.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I can't help you with your hate hate hate for Win 8. Don't get it, either, because once I got used to it I like it just fine. I have never had an issue with not being able to use the touchpad. Have you installed all of the updates by any chance???
