That's exactly how I use it Inkheart. I bought the phone and didn't need to get a plan. I put it straight on my wifi and use it as a second phone to scroll and play games on. There's ALSO an app called helium mobile that offers free data. They give you a virtual sim that I'm trying to figure out now. They also mail you a physical one if you want. The app is free in the Google play store. I probably have an affiliate link but I'm not going to do all of that. Check it out.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No you do not have to automatically pay for the service. You actually would have to set up an account and pay for whatever plan you choose through the provider before service would start. Also even then your not locked in. Because total wireless is a prepaid phone service provider. I actually just put a different SIM card in my phone, called my current company and switched it to the new phone even though it was locked.
